Canada Express Entry Categories
Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)
Designed for individuals with foreign work experience. This pathway relies on a strict 100-point grid where applicants must score a minimum of 67 points to become eligible for the pool.
- Work Experience: Minimum 1 year of continuous, paid full-time work (NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3) within the last 10 years.
- Language (CLB 7): IELTS General, CELPIP, or PTE Core are accepted. CLB 7 is mandatory for pool entry.
- Education: Canadian secondary institution credential OR an ECA (Educational Credential Assessment) for foreign degrees.
- Proof of Funds: Required (unless legally authorized to work in Canada with a valid job offer).
Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
The premier pathway for international students and temporary foreign workers who have already established a workforce presence inside Canada.
- Work Experience: Minimum 1 year of skilled work experience (NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3) inside Canada within the last 3 years.
- Legal Status: Work experience must be obtained while under valid local status (e.g. PGWP).
- Language (TEER 0/1): CLB 7 (IELTS 6.0 in all bands) for managerial/professional professions.
- Language (TEER 2/3): CLB 5 mandatory for technical/skilled trades.
Category-Based Selection Strategy
IRCC's primary mechanism for targeted invitations based on Canadian economic priorities.

French-Language
The highest priority. Requires CLB 7 in all 4 French skills (NCLC). Often invites at CRS 300-400.
Healthcare Professionals
Includes 35+ occupations. 1 year of continuous experience required in the last 3 years.
STEM Professionals
Targets Engineers, Architects, and IT specialists. Essential for the BC/Ontario tech pivot.
Trade Occupations
Focus on Carpentry, Plumbing, and Electrical trades. Highly consistent draw volume.
Education
Targets Early Childhood Educators and specialists to support national growth.
2026 Regulatory Warning: Agriculture Removal
Please be advised: The 'Agriculture and Agri-Food' category has been removed from IRCC's priority draw list for 2026. Applicants in these fields should pivot toward General draws or Provincial Skilled Worker streams (MPNP/SINP).
